The prominent French writer, born to a Catholic family in Toulon, Provence, due to the familial naval tradition spent her childhood in the Norman harbour of Le Havre. She has based her large literary work not only on her familial background attached to the sea but also on her studies of history, philosophy and ethnology at the university in Paris, her work in the young adult department of the Gallimard publishing house, two long-time stays in USA, and her study of sociology. Since 2000 she has drawn on her extensive training and experience as a prolific professional writer, gaining not only popularity but also nominations for prestigious literary awards which she often wins.
