Renowned Dutch writer and journalist Pieter Waterdrinker, whose real name is Van der Sloot and who publishes under his mother’s surname, studied Russian, French, and Dutch law. As a journalist, he lived outside the Netherlands for many years, mainly in Russia since 1996 (his partner is Russian), from where he published a number of his books. It was only after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that he and his partner moved to France. He stands out among Dutch-language authors primarily thanks to his treatment of highly non-Dutch, universal themes, but also thanks to his direct, one might say “reportage” style of writing. His books have been translated into English, German, and Russian, the film rights have been sold, and one of his novels has been adapted into an opera. Since he began publishing, Waterdrinker has received numerous literary awards.
