Céline. The novel, set in multiple time periods, tells the story of Tolya Khitrov, the son of a Dutch mother and a Russian-Ukrainian nuclear physicist who emigrated to the Netherlands through the Israel. The book begins when the protagonist, a graduate translator of French and Russian, returns under a false name from fighting on the Ukrainian front to the Netherlands to be with the love of his life, the soprano Zita.
In Netherlands, however, he learns that Zita has committed suicide, and he also discovers that he is being pursued by unknown men whom he suspects of having connections to the secret service and high political circles. In panic he flees to Paris and together with Céline, a cat that he rescued from the hell of bombing, hides in a hotel and tries to find out what actually happened. At that moment, he metaphorically opens the door to the reader and invites them into his past through his memories.
